KLUTE (U.K) (Commercial Suicide)
A rebel with a cause, Klute is truly unique artist and continues to be creative force in drum & bass after well over a decade in the scene. His productions mix strong melodies with tough beats, bearing the influence of Klute’s roots in punk and techno, and his livewire DJ sets known for their energy and intensity. His label, Commercial Suicide, has gone from strength-to-strength with recent releases from heavy hitters such as Amit, Break, Hydro and SKC. A new solo artist album is slated for Spring 2010, as Klute strives once again to challenge preconceptions with a different sound for the dancefloor.
Klute's new album 'music for prophet' is now complete and scheduled for release at the end of May 2010. Now in the hands of a fortunate few DJs, fans of DJ Presha's Samurai Music show and John B's podcast will have been among the first to get a taste of what's in store. Bijou caught up with him to find out what’s been happening since his last visit.
Hi how are you?
You know what, I am doing GREAT! thanks for asking.
It’s been a busy year for you with numerous tours around the globe Djing, Production in your downtime and on planes, running your label Commercial Suicide and putting together your 6th Album. What the hell do you do for fun!
I certainly don’t make music on planes! You just made that up. Anyway, what do I do for fun? Good question. If I was a journalist I would ask the same question. I collect hotel pens. I’m pretty fussy. They have to be from places I’ve actually stayed and I wont consider pencils. The best kind of hotel pen is one that says the name of the hotel and the city its from. I have quite a few doubles, which I might be willing to swap with people, but not for other hotel pens.<br. Lets get straight to the juicy stuff then, some of us have been lucky enough to hear a few tunes of the album via DJ Presha’s Samurai Podcast, and it’s all sounding good. What makes this album different to the rest?
Nothing at all! Why should it be any different? I mean, yes, its all new music, but why is there this implication that I need to be David Bowie and reinvent myself everytime I make a new record. It’s Klute, it was made on computers, its the same. It’s great though.
What is your personal favourite tune of the album?
Fools Love.
So, it’s just been released, how has the reaction to it been so far?
It hasn’t actually been released yet. The album will be out 26th July 2010. Sorry about that. The reaction has been great, I’m sure its not everyone’s cup of tea, but people don’t generally go out of their way to tell you they don’t like something. I wouldn’t mind too much if they did, as long as they weren’t being vindictive.
Drum n Bass changes like the wind, yet you always seem to retain your signature style, when you are writing do you ever get tempted to write a different style, or is it more that you prefer to expand on what you love?
No, not really. D&B is a bit of a safety blanket in a way. I do owe it to myself to move beyond the computers and make something more physically expressive which I hope to do soon. The reason why I continue to make Klute music the way I do is because I enjoy it and I think what comes out is pretty cool. Its not a sport, I don’t need to feel like I need to beat my personal best or anything, I just want to keep making music that means something to myself and hope it means something to others as well.
So you haven’t written any Dubstep lol :P
No, I don’t really like what became of dubstep.
Your label Commercial Suicide is renown globally for it’s quality releases, tell us a little bit about what’s been happening the past year and what you have in store for us through the rest of the year?
2009 was one of the more quieter years for Commercial Suicide 2010 has rapped up a little, especially with the Klute album. There’s a lot to come. We’ve just had Nymfo and the 2nd Mindscape solo 12" next is Amit, The Upbeats, some Dom & Roland and Vicious Circle too.
You have always had your finger on the pulse and taken risks on upcoming producers, what do you look for in a tune from an unknown artist?
I only look for music that I like. Doesn’t matter who makes it.
Anyone we should look out for?
No. Ok, Nymfo, Mindscape. Me.
For the gear heads out there, what is your latest studio toy, and why do you love it?
Mark of the Unicorn B.P.M. its just fun.
What tunes are you rinsing in your sets this month, got any tasty dubs for the trainspotters?
Yes, have lots of tasty dubs.
It’s so good to have you back again in Sydney, of course we are in for a treat! How often are you touring and where are some of the places you love to visit around the world?
Thanks for having me back, Sydney is great, as is Melbourne , Adelaide and Perth. New Zealand is my home away from home. Love it over there.
What do you miss the most when you are away from home?
Sex and violence and trains, and bird spotting.
Look forward to your set @ Chinese Laundry, have a safe flight and bring a jacket, it’s cold down here!
